
CDL Student Information & Expectations
Every CDL student at Shelly Truck Driving School is expected to maintain a professional demeanor, adhere to safety rules and protocols, and follow the outlined policies, expectations, and procedures designed to help you succeed as a CDL student.
Preparing for Training
Before class begins, here’s what you need to know to get ready for training. Please take a few minutes to ensure you arrive prepared for your first day.
Dress Requirements
Safety is our top priority, and students must dress with safety in mind. Each CDL student must adhere to the following dress requirements:
No loose clothing or hair that could get caught in doors and equipment
Closed-toe shoes must be worn at all times (sandals and flip-flops are not permitted)
Textbooks and Supplies
Textbooks and supplies will be handed out during the first day of class and are the responsibility of the student. Students must bring textbooks to class every day.
Attendance & Personal Conduct
Proper attendance and professionalism are expected from each CDL student at Shelly Truck Driving School. Show up ready to learn, follow instructions, and treat others and equipment with respect.
Attendance & Leave of Absense
CDL students must maintain a nearly perfect attendance record to pass the course. Here is what’s expected:
- A minimum attendance of 90% is required.
- Any attendance below 90% or four or more absences may lead to dismissal.
- No show, no call will not be tolerated and will be reviewed by the director.
- All leaves of absence must be submitted in writing and approved by the director.
Tardiness
Being late to the classroom or truck training four or more times may lead to termination from the program. Make-up work will be assigned and is expected to be made up promptly. There is no charge for make-up work.
CDL Student Conduct
Every CDL student is expected to demonstrate respect, punctuality, and responsibility. Shelly Truck Driving School holds you to the following expectations:
- Students are expected to be on time for all classes.
- Must follow all instructor directions in the classroom, range, and on the road.
- Cell phones are not permitted during classroom time, range training, or road training.
- Drugs and alcohol are strictly prohibited.
- Treat school property and equipment with care.
Failure to follow the rules may lead to dismissal by the director.
Student Complaint Procedure
Student concerns are taken seriously. The following complaint procedure will be reviewed with all CDL students on the first day of orientation.
- The student should communicate their concern to an Instructor.
- If the student feels that the concern has not been addressed properly, they may then communicate the concern to the Training Supervisor.
- After meeting with the Training Supervisor, the student feels that the concern was not resolved, they may then meet with the Executive Director of the School.

Termination Policy
A CDL student may be terminated for the following:
- Not maintaining a passing grade
- Excessive tardiness
- Absenteeism beyond 10% of the course
- Acting with unsafe behavior
The school director is responsible for any termination decisions.
Academic Evaluation
All CDL students will be evaluated on their performance in the classroom, lab, and road work.
Grading System
Students are tested on the following grading scale:
A – 90% to 100% Excellent work or has achieved the specific driving objectives.
B – 80% to 89% Above average in class work and behind the wheel
C – 70% to 79% Average classroom work and behind the wheel
D – 60% to 69% Unsatisfactory progress. Remedial training may be required.
Classroom / Lab
Students are tested throughout the course of the classroom and lab. A minimum grade of 80% is considered proficient, and each graded test is placed on the student’s transcript. The grades are evaluated weekly by the Director.
Road Work
All vehicles use non-synchronized manual transmissions. Each CDL student receives a driving progress report after every yard or road session, evaluated weekly by the Director.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate, each CDL student must:
- Maintain a minimum grade average of 80% by the end of the course.
- Maintain a 90% attendance rate.
- Earn a passing score on the state’s written and driving Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) examinations.
- All program graduates will receive a diploma.
Tuition Policies
The following policies apply to Class A 160: Basic Tractor-Trailer Driving.
Tuition
The tuition of $5,800.00 includes all materials and testing.
Refund Policy
All refunds are given based on the percentage of training completed by the student.
- Up to 10% completed: 90% refund
- Up to 25% completed: 55% refund
- 25–50% completed: 30% refund
- After 50% completed: No refund
- All VA Beneficiary students shall receive an exact Pro-Rata refund.
In the event a student is unable to pass the learner’s permit examination, a refund is made in accordance with the standard refund policy based on the last date of attendance. The termination date for refund calculation purposes is the student’s last day of recorded attendance. An applicant rejected by the school is entitled to a refund of monies paid.
Cancellation Policy
If an applicant wishes to cancel their enrollment agreement before the program begins, they will receive a 100% refund. If the applicant has not toured the school’s facilities but has enrolled, they will also receive a 100% refund if, upon touring, they are dissatisfied and notify the school within three days.
